Research on Rice, Maize and Vegetables:

BRAC has established two agricultural research and development centers – at Joydebpur, Gazipur and at Sherpur, Bogra where applied agricultural research is being undertaken to fulfill the demand of good quality seed and seedlings of better crops for successful agricultural production which imply high yield and more earning for the farmers. BRAC is the pioneer in hybrid rice variety development in Bangladesh. BRAC has developed 6 varieties of hybrid rice, 3 varieties of hybrid maize where one is quality protein maize (QPM) and 9 vegetables varieties.

Frontier research to address climate change and food security:

BRAC has initiated frontier research to address climate change adoption in agriculture. BRAC has validated started to extend salt and submergence tolerant rice variety in the coastal regions.

Plant Biotechnology Tissue culture Laboratory:

BRAC produce disease free plantlets of various crops such as potato, banana, stevia and strawberry by rapid re-generation technique.

Soil testing laboratory:

BRAC has established a soil testing laboratory with the objective to provide a judicious fertilizer prescription of the crops grown by the farmers. Farmers have easy access to test their samples with reasonable charge in this laboratory.

Seed production, processing and marketing:

We produce high quality seeds of both hybrid and inbred varieties of rice, maize, vegetable and potato on own farms as well as through contract growers. We have established two modern scientific automatic seed processing and packing plants in Sreepur, Gazipur and Sherpur, Bogra where yearly capacity is around 5500 Metric Ton. There are 345 listed seed dealers and 4120 sub dealers where farmers can purchase the BRAC seeds.

Agricultural extension project:

A total of 136,320 Village Organizations (VO) and around 500,000 local farming families are given training and farming technologies and credit services to help boost land productivity and income in disaster prone coastal, northern Monga prone area and sharecroppers of Bangladesh.

Tenant farmers development project (BCUP):

Since October 2009, BRAC has initiated an innovative credit scheme for the development of tenant farmers (Borga Chashi). Bangladesh Bank has provided of BDT 5 billion to provide loans to tenant farmers at a low interest rate. Under the project, we organize tenant farmers (men and women) into village organizations (VOs) and providing them with both credit and training on modern agriculture.
